Remedial Massage

The prime focus of therapists at Aware Health, this form of therapy is mainly used to help the body manage pain, correct postural & biomechanical dysfunctions, recover from injury, increase flexibility and break down scar tissue. Employing initial postural assessment and orthopaedic testing, a combination of techniques such as deep tissue massage, muscle energy technique, positional release, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, active release and the major techniques listed below may be used within a remedial therapy session. Stretching & strengthening exercises are also utilised when appropriate. Do you need your therapist to work deeper or lighter? Don't be shy, make sure you ask them.

Remedial Massage is claimable with selected private health funds. Please speak to your health fund to see if you are eligible.

Myofascial Cupping

Myofascial cupping is a soft tissue technique using a small flame to form a vacuum within special glass cups and is combined with massage or used separately to redistribute energy and increase circulation to the local area. Working over trigger points or areas of tension within muscles, this process helps to speed up relaxation, break down scar tissue, and to reduce the presence of tension & adhesions. Cupping can also be used to manage cold/flu and chest congestion. Used statically, cupping can be relatively pain free and highly suitable for people with low pain thresholds.

Myofascial Dry Needling (MDN)

MDN is a safe form of treatment for common musculoskeletal conditions and chronic myofascial pain. Through the use of acupuncture needles via Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), an inflammation response is produced in common trigger points or areas of muscle shortening, to quickly and effectively reduce pain. Proper stretching after a MDN session is advised to reduce the feeling of delayed onset muscle soreness and to maintain the lengthened muscle position. Remedial massage techniques are always used post needling to reduce the tendernes or delayed onset musscle soreness as a result of MDN.

Pregnancy Massage

Remedial or relaxation, pregnancy massage usually involves releasing the tension build up in the shoulders and lower back usually associated with a constant changing body shape and altered weight bearing due to pregnancy. A special pregnancy cushion is used during massages to allow the mum-to-be to lie comfortably on her chest and stomach without adding any dangerous pressure to the unborn baby. If you've ever been pregnant, you would know what a luxury lying on your stomach can be.

Please speak to one of our practitioners to see if you are suitable for pregnancy massage within the first trimester of your first pregnancy. Massage after this stage is highly beneficial to help achieve a more comfortable pregnancy.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) - the natural immune booster

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) was developed in the 1930’s by Emil Vodder, a Dutch Physiotherapist, and later modified to include other modalities such as massage and specific MLD exercise. Consisting of slow, gentle and directional strokes aimed towards the heart, this massage technique is specifically used to encourage pumping of the lymphatic system to drain the body of excess fluid.

As a non-medicinal immune system bolster, MLD speeds up the transportation of toxins and immune cells through the superficial lymphatic vessels to the nodes, which are mostly found in the underarms, neck and groin area. Used as a preventative measure to combating colds, flu and infection, MLD is an ideal alternative to drugs.

Additional benefits include transportation of dietary fats and vitamins from the gastrointestinal tract to the blood system, the reduction of pain perception, an indirect increase of muscle tone and relaxation. Common conditions suitable for the use of MLD also include water retention, pregnancy, stress, post-traumatic conditions, skin trauma, pre/post surgery, constipation, acne, lethargy and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Please speak to our reception staff or massage therapists before your session to see if MLD suits you.

Relaxation Massage

Long flowing strokes & holistic pulsing are used to effectively manage stress, depression, anxiety and insomnia as well as relieving tension and headaches.  It can also stimulate the mind and improve circulation in the body, therefore promoting a reduction in pain levels and an improved lifestyle. This style of massage is often suitable as an initial starting point for those suffering from chronic syndromes such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or neuromuscular disorders.
